Cowbell play the wonderful What’s Cookin’ night in Leytonstone, East London.
On the bill tonight…
Oh! Gunquit / Cowbell
Oh! Gunquit are a North London based 4-piece band concocting spunky rumble bop trash rock’n’roll. Tribal tom toms beat wildly and guitars twang, high-spirited vocals bawl and purr, and a seedy tenor sax wails for an extra slice of exotica. Songs about Tigers, Cherries, and Killers were recorded in the bands’ cellar with Sam Bam Leadfoot on drums/vox Manchine guitar/vox, Dr Zoom on Sax and Wanda Slazzy on vocals & occasional trumpet. These Neo-surf garage rockers bring back the sexiness of the B-52′s, The Cramps, with some Link Wray & ESG thrown in for good measure.
Cowbell are our very very favourite garage soul rock ‘n’ roll duo. Their songs combine a lyrical charm and ease with a sound that’s full-bodied and powerful in spite of their stripped-down set-up. They take their influences from both sides of the Atlantic with a love for both the output of U.S labels such as Stax, Motown and Sun and for British sixties R’n’B bands such as The Small Faces, The Kinks and The Zombies. Their 2nd album is due anytime soon.
“Highway-hitting, LSD invoking”, ARTROCKER. “Shoves you directly into the midst of a dirty garage rock gig at The Marquee in 1968″, THE 405. “One of the best live bands Iíve seen in a long time”, CHRIS HAWKINS BBC 6 MUSIC.
